Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) should be introducing quad-core chips next year. Intel has just given the first glimpse of a quad-core chip coming next year.

Clovertown, a four-core processor, will start shipping to computer manufacturers late this year and hit the market in early 2007. Clovertown will be made for dual-processor servers, which means that these servers will essentially be eight-processor servers.

Multi-core processors largely help increase performance in multi tasking operations. Servers and office workstations will largely benefit from these. As far as gaming and some other applications are concerned, the multi-core technology has not shown so much benefit till now (due to lack of software support, etc.) and has not justified the cost (cost to performance ratio).
